Year Book of Indian Philately 2012

year book 2012

The Year Book of Indian Philately 2012

by Madan Middha

The Year Book of Indian Philately : 2012 by Mr Madan Middha has just been released. 2012 edition of the Year Book includes important philatelic texts / articles on some important subjects in Indian Philately . This edition of Year Book includes some  important articles mentioned below :

- World famous Modern Indian Postal Historian Sh Ashok Kumar Bayanwala has authored an article on Indian “ P Stamps ”, known as “My Stamp”s in India, a very contemporary subject about very interesting & colourful philatelic collectibles, encompassing the history of “My Stamp”s from the very first issue in 2001 to the date.

- The 2012 edition contains an exclusively commissioned article on “Indian Service Stamps”, a sinfully ignored aspect of Indian Philately until now. The article highlights some unlisted & unknown-till-now denominations of Post Independence Indian Service Stamps. Service stamps were discontinued in 2001; but the article reveals that these are still being printed & distributed by the department with un-deniable proofs and pictures of the specimen. A revealing article.

- Well known versatile philatelic writer  Naresh Agarwal has penned an illustrative text for the edition, focused on “Indian Bazaar Cards” , a very interesting and reflective component of the Indian Postal Stationery of Pre-independence era. The article throws all-round light on these cards, which are an integral part of the Indian Postal History and of the Social History as well.

- Dr Satyendra Kumar Agarwal, a very much recognized philatelic author of high repute, has added the flavor of the Thematic Philately to the Year Book’s this edition with his well researched well illustrated article on“Miniature Paintings of India”. A delight to go through.

- Master of his subject, Sh Ilyas Ahemad Patel has also added to the readability of the edition with his focused article on his specialized subject “ Indian Bridges in Philately”; another well researched interesting thematic article.

- “Virtual Philately” , the latest incarnation of philately, specially to attract the ‘Generation – IT’ to its fold, is the subject of the write-up authored by Sudhir Jain for this edition of the Year Book. This tells, how to become a philatelist without spending even a paisa..

International Shows, Issue Programme for 2013, Indian Issues of 2012 ( including miscellaneous issues), Postal History 2012, Events & Society News 2012 & Philatelic Tidbits from all over the world.

- Like the earlier editions, all the commemorative issues of the edition-year are explained with extensive thematic & technical details including illustrations, with a view to explore the contexts of the issues for the collections of the philatelists. For more detailed coverage, the illustrations of the stamps have been replaced by that of the complete FDCs of the issues, to make them more useful and illustrative for the collectors.

- Details of the current Indian Postal rates including for the Premium Services of India Post like  Speed Post (including International Speed Post ), Greetings Post, Media Post,  Bill Mail Service, Direct Post & so on.

- A three part bibliography for the editions of the Year Book is also integrated in the edition for the readers’ ready reference. Three parts of the bibliography are focused on The Individual Articles, The Subject wise Classification & The Authors.

New Book on FDCs and Folders of India…

PT1A_thumb3

Collector's Guide to First Day Covers & Folders of India

With Set of Stamps, Se-tenant Stamps & Miniature Sheets

PT11_thumb by Praful Thakkar

Nowadays, in philatelic fraternity, focus on modern Indian philately has gathered grounds. The subject of modern philately is a fascinating section which is capable to delight the collector’s eyes with various sizes, color shades, cancellation marks, legends and creative designs which have a religious, cultural, historical, political and commercial overtone. It has colors, creativity and charisma.  It has carved out an important niche in the hearts of new philatelists and collectors. This has happened because in last few years India Post has issued varieties of stamps, se-tenants, Miniature sheets, Sheetlets, Presentation Packs, FDCs and many more philatelic items which attracted the collectors in India and all over the world.

It is also observed that in recent times, a new category for FDC has been incorporated at all the levels of exhibitions. This shows that the charm and charisma of FDCs has been accepted and acknowledged. It is true that this is a modern subject which has huge philatelic potential.

Since 1947, approximately more than 2300 stamps must have been issued along with their respective FDCs and folders. It may be difficult to collect, preserve and present all of them. This Guide is an effort to narrow down the subject to substantial size without losing its collecting pleasure. This Catalogue is a showcase which gives  glimpses of FDCs of Set of Stamps, Se-tenant Stamps and Miniature Sheets which form the total of about 450 having equal number of Folders. Thus this theme has a small gamut and it can be managed easily.  Here, an effort is made to maximize the number of colored examples to give a creative and colorful dimension to this fascinating philatelic theme. In this Catalogue Valuation of various FDCs and folders is given to give a basic guideline to the collectors.

This book is an attempt  to present this subject with all its facets to cater the needs of collectors. Various checklists, illustrations and rare items are displayed in color so as to give an idea as to how the collection will look in totality. Pricing has also been done so that the collector in pursuing his missing items can get a guidance. They need right information, proper way of presentation and required items at a reasonable price. In short, they  require a touchstone to measure their efforts and to further improve their collection. This Guide will be able to satisfy all requirements of the collectors in particular and hobby in general.

Mr Mainak Kathiara, President Emeritus, Gujarat Philatelists' Association has rightly observed in his Welcome Message that  “ Perhaps once in a generation a book like 'Collector's Guide to First Day Covers & Folders of India with Set of Stamps, Se-tenant Stamps & Miniature Sheets' comes along. I would say it is a more than a book/catalogue, there is a living energy in it, one you would probably feel as you hold it & flip through the chapters. It has the power to create an experience in readers, and change their collections for the better.......

This is a first publication of its kind with pricing on FDCs & Folders with Set of Stamps, Se-tenants, Miniature Sheets and many more collectibles........I would like to tell the collectors that this is the 'future book' in Indian philately with the involvement of large number of philatelists........

If I were to sum up, the essence of the book 'Collector's Guide to First Day Covers & Folders of India with Set of Stamps, Se-tenant Stamps & Miniature Sheets' in one phrase,  it would be 'Present Moment Awareness'. "

The book will be available from Praful Thakkar, Ahmedabad pkthakkar@yahoo.com   or  in Mumbai INPEX 2013 Exhibition from Todywalla's Stall.

THE GREAT INDIAN RAILWAYS THROUGH PHILATELY

Rail book

THE GREAT INDIAN RAILWAYS THROUGH PHILATELY

Book Review – By  ILYAS PATEL

Our friend and past president of GPA Mr Mainak Kathiara gave me a very decent coffee table book titled “The Great Indian Railways through Philately” to refer and write a review for it. This book is an Eastern Railway Publication and written by one of its employee – cum – philatelist Mr Mohammad Mujibullah. It is published in 2009. From the bibliography, I learnt that the author have already contributed two books on India Railways through philately and this being his third one. It is a matter of great pleasure that the author is serving both the Indian Railways and the philately by making such useful contributions in literature class.

rail book 2 The book is printed in full color and with exhaustive illustrations being a coffee table book. All the information is precise and concise. The author has tried to make it fully illustrative since there was no page limitation being departmental publication. But in doing so I feel that there is a duplication of material and wastage of costly pages. Such pages could have been used cleverly with additional information as I learnt from Mainak that the author is a largest collector on India Railways and have his own museum too. He collects everything related to Indian Railways.

In the book the author has adopted a philatelic time line against the traditional historical time frame to demonstrate his collection. Accordingly, he started with Railway Mail service (RMS) cancellation being introduced first as per philatelic time frame and have done with Travelling Post Office, Railway Sorter, Too Late, Train Late, Indian State Railways as well as cancellations of railways in Burma. The author has covered all the stamps issued so far and provided brief information for each of them including informative sketches as and when needed. He has not forgotten the contribution of various personalities who made note worthy contribution for the development and expansion of Indian Railways. The author has included some rare photographs and beautiful maxim cards to make it lucid and colorful as well as detailed list for perfin used by various railway systems in India. From the entire efforts it seems that the author want to make it an illustrative book through the medium of philately and not a useful reference book on Indian Railways that has a long standing history of 150+ years even through the same medium. I personally believe that he may have done it in his other two publications on the similar title and for that reason it is kept simply illustrative.

While reviewing the book philatelically, it is to mention that the author have used words large and small cancellation in RMS chapter. He could have properly defined it with common notations like diameter size and font size to distinguish them clearly. I believe that the author is aware about it. In illustrations shown on page 26 to 30 “*” is shown in the circle whereas it is a floral design rightly shown on starting page cancellation illustrations. There is an editing mistake on page 5 in which it is mentioned as 1856 instead of 1895 in small RMS cancellation. In Railway Telegraphs, the author has shown the use of only latest post-independence stamps. In fact, licenses were granted to railways to transact telegraphic business to accept prepayment of telegraph charges either in cash or postage stamps but they were not authorized to deface them initially. All British India stamps were used for the purpose. Licensed Railway Telegraph System is a glorious chapter in the history of Indian Railways and cannot be neglected. I also believe that instead of putting and discussing them in to a separate chapter, if the author has discussed all our railways that are declared as World Heritage Railways by UNESCO under a title “Our World Heritage Railways” to make it more lucid and informative. To the best extent of my knowledge, The Great Indian Peninsula Railway was the first to build railway line in India and they built the first railway bridge “Thane Creek Bridge” in India and Asia as well in 1852. The same is appeared on 2004 issue of stamp on 150 years of India Post. I think the author could have covered this important part of history of Indian Railways. By giving a very abstract form of bibliography, the author has not adopted the standard notations for bibliography. Thus it is not useful to any reader to make out a search in the market.

In short this colorful book is fully illustrative one with exhaustive philatelic illustrations to serve the very purpose of the author. For novice philatelist on Indian Railways, it will serve as a good handy tool. It will not impress the hard core and sincere philatelists collecting on this theme. They have to look elsewhere. I firmly believe that with clever use of space for illustrations, number of pages could have been reduced and thereby the cost. Still the author makes a very good effort and his work can be a welcome addition in the philatelic library.

Global Philatelic Library

image

The Global Philatelic Library website was awarded a Gold Medal at the recent IPHLA literature exhibition in Germany. Two new libraries have joined: the British Library (UK) and the Kohler Library (Germany). The British Library list allows people to see the index to the fabulous Crawford Library which contains many rare or unique items. This site now contains instructions in languages other than English.

The Global Philatelic Library has become a world-wide success as an international philatelic venture. The global-free access to philatelic research from partner libraries has established the library as one of the most significant philatelic developments to have ever taken place.

The Global Philatelic Library ( www.globalphilateliclibrary.org) has become a world-wide success as an international philatelic venture. The global-free access to philatelic research from partner libraries has established the library as one of the most significant philatelic developments to have ever taken place.

The Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum hosted a celebration event this month to recognize Alan Holyoake, whose leadership helped spearhead the initiative, and the founding partners—Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum and Smithsonian Libraries in Washington, D.C., the Royal Philatelic Society London and the American Philatelic Research Library and the American Philatelic Society in Bellefonte, Pa. A total of 19 global philatelic libraries are now participating in the project, contributing more than three-quarters of a million philatelic records.

Officially launched June 1, the Global Philatelic Library website, hosted by the Royal Philatelic Society London, is a present-day reality due to the inspiration and dedication of its founding partners. Along with partner libraries around the world, the website establishes a single destination—a centralized gateway—by which philatelists around the world can search, locate and access philatelic research from partner libraries in real time, from any computer. Searchable listings of books and publications, as well as resource locations and access, are now one click away, providing an invaluable resource to those doing philatelic research.

“The amazing success of the Global Philatelic Library, in so quickly becoming the world’s number one information retrieval gateway enabling philatelists and researchers to gain access to the world’s major library and reference centers, justifies the trust initially given by the founding partners in supporting my proposals,” said Holyoake, internationally known philatelist. “I also wish to thank all those who have worked so hard in enabling this concept to become a reality.”

The Global Philatelic Library now enters a new phase, with a need to strengthen the gateway in order to meet the tremendous global demands being placed upon the existing infrastructure. Continued expansion of participating libraries from around the world and technical enhancements to the system will be priorities moving forward.

“This project has become a tremendous success, and one benefitting philatelists around the world,” said Allen Kane, director of the museum. “It was rewarding to celebrate the founding partners and acknowledge Alan Holyoake’s efforts in championing the initiative at such a special event.” The National Postal Museum is devoted to presenting the colorful and engaging history of the nation’s mail service and showcasing one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of stamps and philatelic material in the world. It is located at 2 Massachusetts Avenue N.E., Washington, D.C., across from Union Station. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (closed Dec. 25). Book Review…

Flag 2 image

The Indian National Flag unfurled through Philately By Sekhar Chakrabarti

image Book Review by  Ilyas Patel

Editor - GPA News

I have just gone through a very well researched, decently composed and thoughtfully illustrated color book titled “The Indian National Flag unfurled through Philately” written by Sekahr Chakrabarti. Sekhar Chakrabarti is an active philatelist and working on this topic since long. The book is published by Niyogi Books, New Delhi and is priced at Rs 495/-. It is available in Ahmedabad at Natraj Book Store with 10% discount.

This book was given to me by my friend and a vivid collector of Indian National Flag Prakash Jambudi to refer and write a review for it. Being actively associated with him for this theme, I am aware that it is a very difficult theme to develop for want of sufficient philatelic material and even more difficult to write a book for want of supporting literature. In spite of all these difficulties, Chakrabarti has adventured in this field which suffers from many gaps and unanswered issues. His Herculean efforts have resulted in an innovative book with fascinating history of our national flag through the medium of philately. The author did an excellent but a balancing job linking history with philately and put up a brilliant story in a very lucid manner. It is a well known fact that the story of our national flag is also a story of Indian National Movement for total independence. In the process of total independence, the process of evolution of a national symbol such as a flag played a pivot role in public awakening and subsequent mass movements for civil disobedience. In this sense, it is a very good book on philatelic history of our national independence.

The book begins with historical background through Indian Epics and legends and gives brief account about flag and its appearance in our religious scriptures. From there the author takes us on a tour to the age of discovery and arrival of the European flags in India. The author has given exhaustive information about the arrival of the Portuguese, the Dutch, the British as well as the French and their efforts to establish their colonies in India and their respective flags. The author has also touched the flags of our princely states but cleverly in very brief not to deviate from the main topic.

With this brief historical account, the author takes us to the historical background for the evolution of our national flag. The quest for a distinctive Pan-Indian flag covers those who conceived the initial idea of flag making and their respective contribution in this evolution process. Their die hard attempts to symbolize it paved a way for the birth of a Swaraj Flag. From Swaraj Flag to the evolution of our national flag today is precisely covered in chronological order with illustrations of all who contributed to it. The author has not forgotten to mention the topic like flag hoisting and its importance as a matter of national pride.

The author has devoted separate chapters for other aspects of flag; flag related events, its use in sports, at sea, at international forums, in military as well as its legal aspects, etiquettes and protocol. All these chapters are covered with relevant illustrations and brief account of it is given. Being a research scholar he has not forgotten to give chapter wise references to make it a well documented book. The bibliography and detailed index makes it a worth reference book and indicates a dedicated efforts of the author.

Though vexillology is a bit boring theme for philatelists due to limited scope for its development, Sekhar Chakrabarti’s painstaking research and a dedicated pursuit of philately has made his work a very well illustrated philatelic cum historical reference. It is fully colored finely composed and decently printed book worth to refer at a first glance. I personally congratulate the author for his maiden efforts on this theme. With this Sekhar Chakrabarti has also enrolled his name in the elite group of philatelic authors in India. His efforts are worth to be saluted like our National Flag. Jai Hind! Well done and Good Luck.
